Modalert against cocaine addiction.

Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, held in May 2003, was marked by a report on the usage of the drug Modalert for the treatment of cocaine addiction. A report was submitted by Charles A. Dackis, MD (Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania). Previous searches were conducted relatively dopamine agonists and antagonists, antidepressants, and other drugs of different classes. Action of the drug.

The action of the drug occurs mainly through glutamatergic system, whereby the level of synthesis of glutamic acid increases. The drug also inhibits the release of inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The major symptoms of cocaine withdrawal are drowsiness, fatigue, depressed mood and anhedonia. During the studies, which involved patients with narcolepsy, it was revealed that the usage of the given medication by the subjects improved their mood, concentration, increased the level of activity and a sense of well-being.

In his speech at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Dackis, in particular, touched upon the issue of unpublished trials of the drug’s usage, which were carried out by his group at the University of Pennsylvania. The first study was focused on the interaction of the medication and cocaine. Subjects who received the drug in a dosage of 200-400mg, were injected intravenously cocaine too.

Further, experts have observed whether the craving to the drug appears, by what effects (euphoria) it is accompanied and then conducted physical examination and cardiac telemetry. Toxic interactions were not detected. The drug negated the individual effects from taking the cocaine, in particular signs of increased metabolism and euphoria. The second study lasted 8 weeks, and its purpose was to determine the capabilities of Generic Modalert by the treatment of cocaine addiction. To take part in the study agreed up to 17 volunteers. They received medical treatment, as well as twice-weekly cognitive-behavioral therapy.

All the subjects suffered from severe form of addiction to cocaine. One example of this is high doses of the drug, and expressed «uncomfortable» feeling after cancellation.   The data obtained in the experiment were compared with the control placebo group of similar studies devoted to medical treatment of addiction to cocaine. In the experiment were 70% of patients from the drug’s group and 44% from the placebo group. By 47% of members of the drug group tests of urine for cocaine showed a negative result, and in the control group the result was only 6.5%.

During the interview, the subjects who took the drug talked about reducing of depression and cravings for cocaine reception. There was not mentioned any serious side effects, although some patients still experienced insomnia and excessive activity. The conclusion might be the following: Modalert is a very promising drug for the treatment of people addicted to cocaine.
